BASIC NETWORK TROUBLE SHOOTING

Before contacting EVE Networks, you may wish to try the following common troubleshooting tasks:

Try rebooting the affected PC for the following problems:

Microsoft Office crashing or Office toolbar Unavailable

Print jobs are not clearing

Machine crashes or performing very slowly

A Network communication error may be present if the following symptoms occur:

1. Failure to log on to the domain at start-up (No Domain Controller was found...)

2. Some shared printers cannot be printed to.

3. Internet or email services are unavailable.

This shows that your machine is not communicating with the server(s). Check that all network cables are attached to a) the back of your machine, b) the hub connected to your machine c) the back of the server(s) and d) the hub or switch next to the server(s). Also check that there are working lights on the hubs and/or switches in your network.

Login Password is not accepted

Windows 98 and Windows NT passwords are not compatible in normal circumstances. Changing the login passwords on your own machine or the server may result in an error message. If your network has a domain controller, your password can be accepted by performing the following actions:

1. On your Windows 95/98 machine, select 'Start' - 'Search' - 'Files & Folders'

2. Search for any files named *.pwl

3. Delete any files found by highlighting them and pressing the 'Delete' key

Windows 98 does not shutdown properly at the end of the day

There are a number of common causes for this problem, try the following:

1. Always allow Scandisk to run through its procedure when the machine is rebooted manually

2. 'Right-Click' on the 'My Computer' icon, select 'Properties' and 'Hardware' to reach the 'Device Manager'. If any icons in this window are overlaid with a yellow exclamation mark, there is a problem with a piece of hardware - contact EVE to remedy.

Glossary

Domain controller

This is a server (usually running Microsoft NT Server) that validates users when logging onto the domain. A domain is a network confined to the machines that are used directly by your company (mainly in your office building).

Hub/Switch

This is a small box which acts to link many different machines together. It is characterised by a number of network cable sockets and a number of LED's, which serve to display the status of each cable connected.
